This week, hear exciting new tracks from The Head and the Heart, S. Carey, Dehd, and the Beths, and get to know rising artists Phillip-Michael Scales and Rosalia.

The Head and the Heart, “Virginia (Wind in the Night)”

Sometimes bringing in a very specific memory allows others to come into your world. For The Head and the Heart's frontman Jonathan Russell, his life has always been his way to try and get into other people's brains. “Being from Virginia, for me this song represents a long and winding relationship to place — a place that is grounding ... It’s part of my search for a deeper connection without having to compare our experiences directly. There is a reason this song has two titles. One is literal and one is symbolic. Not everyone is from Virginia, I know that. But I bet you have walked home and heard the wind in the night."

Rosalía, “SAOKO”

Grammy-winner Rosalia is sharing music from her upcoming album, Motomami, which will be out March 18. It's a more experimental and aggressive sound from the Spanish singer, with samples of reggaeton on her new track, "SAOKO."

Phillip-Michael Scales, “Find A Way”

Growing up, Phillip-Michael Scales called B.B. King "Uncle B." Those early connections inspired him to pick up the guitar and write his own songs. After being called "one of America’s great soul singers" by The Revue, he's added more blues into his music, and you can hear that in "Find a Way."

S. Carey, “Break Me Open”

The pandemic was traumatic enough for most, but for Eau Claire, Wis., native S. Carey, there was also the death of his father and the end of his marriage. Those deep losses and grief come out in the new album, Break Me Open, releasing April 22. As Carey said, "There is a heaviness to human consciousness right now, a darkness at the surface. Break Me Open is about love — past, present, and future. It’s about fatherhood — the overwhelming feeling of deep love for my kids and the melancholy of watching them grow up right before my eyes. It’s about accepting my faults and wrongdoings, exposing myself, and trying to know myself better than I did the day before. But above the darkness, it’s a message of hope, honesty, and growth."

Dehd, “Bad Love”

Dehd are band that built out of a romantic relationship. That relationship ended just before their debut EP came out in 2016, but the band rallied on with albums delving into that love and breakup on two additional albums in 2019 and 2020. Now they have Blue Skies, which will be out May 27, and love is again a focus for Dehd. "'Bad Love' is about recovering from love addiction and making a decision to stop choosing and aligning with people who aren't your energetic match," says front Emily Kempf.

The Beths, “A Real Thing”

Liz Stokes, the lead singer of New Zealand band The Beths, calls the new single "a kind of anxiety dream." It's one part worries about climate change, one part worrying about the elections in New Zealand and the United States. With "A Real Thing," Stokes said, "I was limply reaching for optimism about the future, but was really just marinating in dread."
