The 1975 hit “Convoy” by C.W. McCall is a song that tells a story of a fictional group of truckers that organize a protest over Citizen’s Band (CB) radio using their own made up code words. After hearing about this unique dialogue, McCall and songwriter Chip Davis bought a CB radio which inspired them to write “Convoy”. After the song’s success on the country and pop charts, the song made its way into film. The movie “Convoy” came out in 1978 starring Kris Kristofferson as the lead trucker, Rubber Duck. Although seemingly light and fun, the song ultimately brought light to serious political issues. Both the song and the movie helped amplify CB radio and trucker culture in mainstream media.

Just as songwriters can be influenced by other forms of media, movie and show writers derive inspiration from music as well. “Convoy” is one of many songs that inspired a story on the big screen. For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear that movies were named after?
