March 01, 2023

In March, we’re celebrating Women’s History Month. In a world where many remember women artists could not be played back-to-back, women have always had a more comfortable home at The Current than elsewhere on the airwaves. In 2021, 68% of the top 44 songs played on The Current were by women or prominently featured women. Similar stations in other markets reported only 13.6%, according to industry data.

But to take that dedication even further during this important month, The Current brings back The Siren, a 24/7 DJ-curated stream that honors and amplifies the sounds of women’s voices and music.

They have shaped music and reflected cultural movements throughout history, despite the barriers they’ve faced in getting heard. From Sister Rosetta Tharp to Japanese Breakfast, Billie Holiday to Billie Eilish, Joan Baez to Joan Jett, Whitney Houston to Lucy Dacus, The Current is continuing its support of, and promoting, women in music.

All month long, we’ll be educating and entertaining listeners—featuring the important roles women have played throughout history, enchanting, electrifying, and educating all of us. That sound you hear? Is The Siren calling out to our audience.

“In a world where woman musicians are still seen as flavor to sprinkle in sparingly on the radio, The Siren is offering a nonstop showcase of femme voices,” says Jade, The Current’s music director. “Sharing the stories of artists like Dolly Parton and Sister Rosetta Tharpe and drawing connections to newer artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Wet Leg. From the Riot Grrrl roars of Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill to Rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson and torch carrier Margo Price. This is a showcase where women in music are today and tracing back the lineage to hear how strong it's always been. To paraphrase Lizzo, these voices aren't the snack, they are the whole damn meal.”
